Light-sweet and heavy-sour crude oil

The petroleum industry often names crude based on the oil's geographical source, for example, “West Texas Intermediate.” Crude oil is also classified based on physical characteristics and chemical composition, and these qualities are described with terms such as “sweet,” “sour,” “light,” and “heavy.”

Sour crude is usually processed into heavy oil such as diesel and fuel oil rather than gasoline (petrol) to reduce processing costs. Presence of Sweet and Sour Crude If exploration and production (E&P) companies are given an option whether to produce sweet or sour crude, without any hesitation they will all opt for sweet crude. The petroleum industry often names crude based on the oil's geographical source, for example, “West Texas Intermediate.” Crude oil is also classified based on physical characteristics and chemical composition, and these qualities are described with terms such as “sweet,” “sour,” “light,” and “heavy.” Heavy sweet crude is going to be increasingly in demand in 2020, as refiners look to pivot towards producing low sulfur fuel oil. (See a particularly good rant here on the topic from @Big_Orrin on Twitter). Lest we forget, lighter crude yields less fuel oil, while sour crude raises the sulfur content. Crude oil is rated using a gravity scale developed by the American Petroleum Institute. The sweet/sour classification has to do with crude's content of sulfur and other impurities. production by quality due to ENI’s World Oil Review and IEA’s reported monthly crude oil production since 1995; indicatively by light sweet, light sour, medium sweet, medium sour, heavy sweet and heavy sour as these classes are defined in Table 1. The model is estimated recursively at monthly
